Third Annual Blue & Gold Alumni Regatta

September 25, 2010

Drexel Sailing Alumni and Undergraduate team members met at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia on the beautiful morning of September 25, 2010. By 9am all eight sails of our Flying Junior fleet were hoisted in the brisk wind. Bagels and coffee were served right before the skippers meeting started. Jason Sinclair (‘12) conducted morning announcements to the crowd of 25. Included in the announcements were the introduction of Doug Brown as the new head coach, a fair winds and good luck wish to the lovely ladies representing Drexel Sailing at the Princeton Women’s Regatta that morning, and an overall introduction of our team. After a tricky launch in 3’’ waters, all boats made it out to the course. A windward-leeward, twice around course was set for the morning. On the committee boat was Ed Doran (’15), Natalie Tosh (’11), and Reuben Krutz (‘14). Stephen Ciccariello (’13) was in the coach boat to set the pins and ensure the safety of the sailors.

The morning’s conditions were 70 degrees and winds around 9mph, gusting to 12mph. The race committee held 4 twice-around races and one, once-around. All eight boats were skippered by alumni! We conducted fleet racing for the morning portion. At noon, the boats were docked for a quick half-hour break. At 12:30 everyone was out on the water again. The undergraduate officers organized the eight boats into four teams. For the remainder of the day, 2v2 races were held on a triangle course. The wind began to blow at 11-13mph with gusts around 15mph.

Second place was awarded to John Townsend (’98) and Clara Engal (’13), who were presented with The Love of Sailing, a picture book. First place along with the Drexel Alumni Regatta Trophy and the legendary seersucker jacket was awarded to Steve Guenther (’08) and Dave Sharp (’01). Hamburgers, hotdogs, and salads were served for dinner, provided by the yacht club. Overall, everyone had a terrific time. On behalf of the Drexel Sailing officers, we thank all the alumni for coming out and would love to see an even better turnout next year!

Sincerely,

Jason Sinclair (’12)
