Philly Fleet Race

October 2 - 3, 2010

This past weekend Jennifer Mislinski and Nedko Yordanov (A Division), and Jason Sinclair and Steve Ciccariello (B Division), sailed in the Philly Fleet Race hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Regatta started off early Saturday morning at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia with a breeze of 8-10mph. The fair wind, however, was short lived. Only two rotations were sailed before lull spots plagued the course. Without enough wind to run a race, University of Pennsylvania made the call to postpone the regatta. Members of most of the teams hurried to the local Wawa for lunch and snacks. The wind on the course eventually filled in enough for us to try and race again. Unfortunately, it lasted all of ten minutes and we were forced to call it a day.

Sunday morning brought some heavier air in a strange kind of way. The breeze was blowing in from the shore, which rarely occurs on the Delaware River by the Corinthian Yacht Club. The land breeze was extremely shifty. Shouts of “Auto tack!” “Gusting!” and “Hike!” were a common occurrence heard out on the water. Winning the race consisted of playing the shifts and watching for puffs. Luckily our skippers Jen Mislinski and Jason Sinclair had their game faces on. The constant auto tacks, and random puffs were no match for their talent. Drexel placed 2nd behind Monmouth. Other competitors included West Point, University of Pennsylvania, UMBC, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton, Villanova, and The University of Delaware. Thank you University of Pennsylvania Sailing Team for hosting a great Regatta!
