Kings Point Dighny Open

Last weekend Drexel sent sailors to two regattas, the Nittany Lion open hosted by Pennsylvania State University and the Kings Point Dinghy Open hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point). The academy is situated at the former Walter P. Chrysler Estate in Kings Point, Long Island, the New York suburb which was F. Scott Fitzgerald's inspiration for "West Egg" in The Great Gatsby. At Kings Point, Drexel was up against #8 ranked Navy, #10 ranked Hobart, #19 ranked Old Dominion, and other top teams in intercollegiate sailing. The USMMA has over 40 boats, 20 420s and 20 FJs, and likewise used them both for their regatta. Drexel ultimately placed #11 out of 20 teams. The team we sent to Kings Point was particularly thrilled with their accommodations at the Best Western in Flushing, Queens. The Nittany Lion Open was a one-day regatta at a lake 1-hour away from State College, Drexel placed fifth. The event is known for being one of the most fun-filled regattas in intercollegiate sailing.

Kings Point Dinghy Open
Kings Point, New York

Drexel sailing attended the Kings Point Dinghy open regatta, held on October 24th and 25th. Saturday the weather was cloudy with spots of rain. The wind was very strong, between 10 and 15 mph from the east with gusts up in the 20s and seas at 2-3 feet. Both A division, Andrew Bergan and Dave Schubert, and B division, Jen Mislinski and Tony Koch, were out on the at the same time in the morning due to the impressive fleet of FJs and 420s that Kings Point owns. After lunch the FJ’s were docked for safety and only the 420’s headed back out with A and B divisions rotating out. The wind continued to build all day with periods of rain. Despite a few capsizes, the team endured and finished the day in middle of the pack.

Sunday morning the wind was around 10 mph and continued to die throughout the day. With both FJ’s and 420’s sailing again, another 8 races were completed before calling it a day. Despite the team’s best efforts it finished in 11 place, only 10 points behind Colgate.
