The Boats
The boats owned and sailed by the team are typical of the double-handed dinghies sailed by most college teams throughout MAISA. The majority of our regattas are sailed in either 420s or the slightly narrower CFJs (club flying juniors). There are several single-handed events held in Laser class boats and one "Big Boats" regatta a year. The Team currently owns eight CFJ's, which were brand new in 2000. Our boats are sailed off the docks located at the Corinthian Yacht Club, just south of the Philadelphia International Airport. It is a 15-20 minute drive from campus; traffic permitting.
The Club Flying Junior: Over forty-five years ago, the CFJ became its own class after serving as a training class for its larger brother class, the Flying Dutchman. Ideal for crews ranging in size from 220-290 lbs, the CFJ is manageable for sailors coming out of the Optimist class and enables young sailors to learn teamwork, boat handling skills, and overall tactics. The stable, forgiving hull is built tough with reinforced fiberglass, high impact bumpers and a simple untapered rig. The CFJ is simple and safe for beginning sailors and yet quick enough to keep collegiate All-Americans interested.
Here are the Specs on a CFJ.
